A journal of ideas about manufacturing technology and how it is changing

About Peter Zelinski

I am a writer. And I am convinced something amazing is happening in manufacturing. It is unfolding slowly. The transformation has to do with technology changes affecting how manufacturing is done, and economic and cultural changes affecting who does manufacturing. I get to be witness to all of this and use my gifts to report on it.

By “manufacturing,” I mostly mean making parts. Public discussion of manufacturing often unduly emphasizes process industries or the facilities where assembly is done. All of this work fundamentally relies on parts and components. Whether for the components of process equipment or the parts that go into assemblies, discrete part production has to happen before other manufacturing can occur. I think a lot about this.

About This Newsletter

The Zelinski Report is all about how part production is changing. It is a journal of ideas for those who are building their careers and their businesses in production part manufacturing.

My Reporting

There is quite possibly no one better qualified to cover this. As a manufacturing technology journalist, I have spent decades reporting on CNC machining as well as over a decade reporting on additive manufacturing. There is no one who has reported on the technology and the special work of discrete part precision manufacturing longer or more comprehensively. (My bio here.)

Safe to Subscribe

This newsletter is not sponsored as yet. I make my income through communications and marketing services to industrial, manufacturing and technology companies. This site is pure joy, pure interest in the subject matter. If there is eventually sponsorship, I will build this so the sponsor has real value but the pace and nature of the reporting are unaffected.

Here is why I am telling you this: It is safe to subscribe. I will not overwhelm your inbox, and I will not send a post until and unless I have something new to share with you. The site is hosted by Substack and maybe they will send promotional messages; you should be able to recognize when that happens. Other than this, you are not signing up for a relentless feed or a barrage of ads if you join me. Subscribing is a way to be sure you don’t miss a new insight when I have something new to share, and it is safe to subscribe from an email address you care about:

Story Ideas

I would love to hear your feedback, including ideas you have stories you would like to see me report or topics or questions in manufacturing you would like to see me explore. As an independent writer, I now have different incentives and, in some ways, greater freedom than what I had in previous roles. If you get me interested and if I can find the practical means to pull it off, I might very well cover the story that interests us both, or follow a path to see where it goes. Contact me here:
